Buyer guide

Buying Ethiopian green coffee in Japan

Japan is one of the world's most discerning specialty coffee markets with a strong appetite for Ethiopian origins — particularly clean washed Yirgacheffe and fruit-forward Guji naturals. This guide covers import duty, MHLW food notification, Yokohama and Kobe port logistics, and how to place your first direct-trade order.

Japanese roasters importing Ethiopian green coffee must complete MHLW food import notification and arrange Yokohama or Kobe port handling. This guide covers import duty, JAS organic requirements, logistics and indicative FOB pricing, so a Japanese buyer can plan a first Ethiopian container from sample approval to arrival.

    Import duty and regulations

Japan applies a 6% general tariff on unroasted green coffee (HS 0901.11). Ethiopia does not benefit from Japan's EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement) preferential rates — the same 6% applies. The duty is calculated on the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight to Japanese port). Confirm the applicable rate with your tsūkan gyōsha (customs broker) before importing.

Green coffee imported into Japan must be notified to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) via the Food Import Notification system (食品等輸入届出). Your Japanese customs broker or nominated importer handles this as standard. Phytosanitary certificate from Ethiopia is required as supporting documentation.

    What Japanese buyers look for

Japanese specialty roasters typically seek exceptional clarity and cup transparency — profiles that express their origin with precision and without off-notes. Yirgacheffe washed lots scoring 88+ SCA, with defined jasmine and bergamot florality, are consistently sought by leading Japanese specialty roasters.

Guji natural lots are particularly valued in Japan for their tropical fruit intensity — mango, lychee, papaya notes that are exotic and expressive without the ferment-forward character that some markets associate with naturals.

Japanese buyers frequently request very detailed lot information: washing station name, altitude, variety composition (where known), drying duration, moisture content, and screen size distribution. We supply all of these as standard with our lot documentation.

    Certifications for Japan

JAS Organic — Japan's national organic standard. Requires certification by a JAS-registered certifier. EU Organic certified lots are not automatically recognised under JAS, though some certifiers operate dual certification. Contact us for current JAS-certified lot availability.

Fair Trade (Fairtrade International) — Valued by Japanese co-op and ethical retail buyers. Available on selected lots.

No certification required for specialty — Many leading Japanese specialty roasters (particularly those affiliated with SCAJ — Specialty Coffee Association of Japan) source on cup quality and direct relationship alone, without formal certification requirements.

    Working with Japanese trading companies

Some Japanese roasters prefer to work through a Japanese green coffee importer or trading company rather than sourcing direct. We work with Japanese trading companies and can supply documentation in formats that facilitate their domestic re-sale. For roasters who want to import direct, we support the process end to end — including L/C terms and Japanese-language documentation where requested.

    Frequently asked questions

What import duty applies to Ethiopian green coffee in Japan?

Japan applies a 6% ad valorem duty to unroasted green coffee (HS 0901.11) from Ethiopia under the general tariff rate. Japan has bilateral trade agreements with several origins but Ethiopia does not currently benefit from a preferential tariff. The duty is applied to the CIF value. Buyers should confirm current rates with a Japanese customs broker (tsūkan gyōsha) before importing.

What is the typical shipping time from Ethiopia to Japan?

Transit time from Djibouti to Yokohama or Kobe is approximately 22–28 days via the major Asia shipping lanes. Some services route via Singapore or Colombo, adding transit time. Tokyo-area importers typically use Yokohama; Osaka-area importers use Kobe.

What certificates does Japan require for green coffee imports?

Japan requires a phytosanitary certificate (issued in Ethiopia) and a food import notification submitted to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) on arrival. Japan does not currently have a deforestation regulation equivalent to EU EUDR. JAS (Japanese Agricultural Standards) organic certification is available for buyers who require organic labelling in the Japanese market.

Do Japanese coffee buyers prefer washed or natural Ethiopian coffee?

Both are valued in Japan. The Japanese specialty coffee market has a strong appreciation for very clean, transparent washed lots — particularly Yirgacheffe washed, which aligns with the Japanese preference for delicate, floral, and tea-like profiles. Natural-process lots (Guji, Harrar) are popular among specialty roasters serving customers who want more distinctive, fruity cup profiles.

What payment terms do you offer for Japanese buyers?

For new Japanese buyers, we typically require 50% deposit at contract and 50% against shipping documents. For established buyers, we can accommodate Letter of Credit (L/C) terms, which are widely used in Japanese green coffee trade. We work with buyers' preferred Japanese trading houses or importers if required.
