Guji has become one of the most sought-after Ethiopian origins in the specialty market, driven by natural-process lots from very high altitudes that deliver exceptional fruit complexity. For buyers who want to offer something more distinctive than Yirgacheffe or Sidama, Guji is the answer.

    Where is Guji?

Guji Zone is in the Oromia Regional State of southern Ethiopia. Coffee is grown across sub-districts including Shakiso, Uraga, Hambela, Kercha, and Ana Sora. Growing altitudes range from approximately 1,800m to above 2,400m in Hambela and Kercha — among the highest-altitude growing areas in all of Ethiopia.

    Guji cup profile: natural

    Typical natural Guji profile:

    • Aroma: blueberry, tropical fruit, red wine, jasmine
    • Flavour: mango, papaya, raspberry, dark chocolate
    • Acidity: soft, ripe, tropical
    • Body: full, juicy
    • Finish: long, sweet, fruit-complex

SCA scores for Grade 1 natural Guji from Ethiopian Arabica: 85 to 89, with exceptional Hambela or Kercha lots cupping above 90.

Guji natural is well-suited to filter brewing where the complexity can develop fully. It also works as a single-origin espresso and pairs well with milk.

    Guji cup profile: washed

    Typical washed Guji profile:

    • Aroma: bergamot, orange blossom, stone fruit
    • Flavour: peach, lime, nectarine, subtle florals
    • Acidity: bright, clean, citrus-forward
    • Body: light to medium
    • Finish: clean, long, delicate

SCA scores for Grade 1 washed Guji: 85 to 88.

Washed Guji offers Yirgacheffe-adjacent character at a slightly different price and profile point — less well-known in the market, which can be a menu differentiation advantage.

    Guji harvest and export timing

    • Cherry picking: November to January (upper-altitude areas into February)
    • Processing: November to March
    • Dry milling and grading: February to May
    • Export-ready (FOB Djibouti): March to May for washed; April to June for natural

The best named-lot Guji allocations — particularly from Hambela and Kercha — are committed to buyers with established relationships before the export window opens. Contact Ethiopian Arabica by January for priority allocation of the highest-scoring Guji lots.

Guji vs Yirgacheffe: what is the difference?

    | | Guji | Yirgacheffe | |---|---|---| | Altitude | 1,800-2,400m | 1,700-2,200m | | Natural profile | Tropical fruit, mango, blueberry | Blueberry, wine, slightly less tropical | | Washed profile | Stone fruit, citrus, subtle floral | Intense jasmine, bergamot, citrus | | Volume available | Lower | Higher | | Best-known process | Natural | Washed |

For buyers who already source Yirgacheffe washed and want to add a natural Ethiopian lot, Guji natural is the natural complement.

    Frequently asked questions

    What makes Guji coffee special?

Guji coffee grown above 2,000m, particularly from Hambela and Kercha, produces some of the highest-scoring natural-process lots in Ethiopia. Very high altitude, genetic diversity of local landrace varieties, and whole-cherry fermentation create exceptional tropical fruit, wine, and berry complexity.

Is Guji coffee the same as Yirgacheffe?

No. Guji and Yirgacheffe are distinct origins in different administrative regions. Guji is in Oromia Region; Yirgacheffe is in Gedeo Zone / South Ethiopia. They share some flavour characteristics at high altitude but have distinct profiles.

What altitude does Guji coffee grow at?

Guji coffee grows at altitudes of 1,800m to above 2,400m. The highest-altitude lots come from Hambela Wamena and Kercha.

Is Guji natural coffee available in wholesale quantities?

Yes, though at smaller volumes than Sidama. Ethiopian Arabica can supply Grade 1 Guji natural lots from 50 bags (3,000 kg) upwards. Contact early in the buying window as allocation is limited.
